Biography of Thomas Otway

Otway was born at Trotton on 3rd March 1652. He was educated at Winchester, and Christs College, Cambridge 1669 - no degree when he left in 1672. During his own time he was a well-known poet and dramatist, a friend of Charles II. His best known play is "Venice Preserved" which has been translated into several languages and performed throughout Europe. He was a close friend of Nell Gwynne's, being given Power of Attorney over her affairs during her latter years. He died, penniless, in London on 16th April 1685, buried in the churchyard of St. Clement Danes.
