Born at Groveland, New York, December 29, 1848. Received his early education at Temple Hill Academy in Geneseo, New York. After a short period of teaching and of practicing law, he became the librarian of the Free Public Library of San Francisco and held this position from 1887 to 1894, when he accepted a similar one at the Newberry Library in Chicago, where he remained until 1899. His volumes of poetry are: "Thistle Drift", 1887; "Woodblooms", 1888; "Out of the Silence", 1897; "Lyrics", 1901; "Poems", 1905; "The Time of Roses", 1908; "At the Silver Gate", 1911.
