George Herbert was born on April 3, 1593 at Montgomery Castle. He was the fifth son of an eminent Welsh family. His father was Sir Richard Herbert. His mother was Magdalen, daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Newport, a wealthy landowner in Shropsire.
George Herbert died of consumption in 1633 at the age of forty. He left behind his wife Jane Danvers who in 1639, married Sir Robert Cook.
